Seoul, Korea - The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on February 9 that the Ministry will host the “Edge of Robot: Ski Robot Challenge,” the world’s first robot ski tournament, at a ski resort in Hoengseong, Gangwon Province, on February 12.
During the tournament, planned to be held on the sideline of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, robots will participate in a race similar to giant slalom competitions, which involve skiing between gates. The robot skiers will be ranked based on finishing time and the points for passing a total of five gates.
The competition will be evaluated on two different categories: autonomous skiing and remote control. While the autonomous skiing category will test the robots’ abilities to recognize gates, the remote control section will examine their mechanical performance. This event is expected to spur public interest in robots and promote research and development in robotics.
Meanwhile, the Ministry will also provide support in setting up a total of 85 robots from 11 different types in stadiums, athletes’ village, and press centers for the successful hosting of the Olympic Games.
