Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Sung Yun-mo (right) made an on-site visit to Rscare Service, a local maker of wheelchairs equipped with an electric assistance device, for physically challenged people, in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, on January 29, in the Ministry’s efforts to drum up innovative businesses under the regulatory sandbox program.

A regulatory sandbox program is a measure to encourage local companies to foster technology-driven new businesses by lifting or suspending existing regulations for a certain period of time. The lack of regulatory standards for electric assistance kits had prevented Rscare from obtaining a viable certification for releasing its new products onto the market.

Minister Sung emphasized that the Ministry will help companies enter into new innovative businesses on time by improving the regulatory sandbox program this year.

The Ministry has so far approved a total of 39 new business items applied to a regulatory sandbox program in such areas as energy, medical products, and food services.
