Minister Lee and Secretary Granholm Commit to Strengthening Clean Energy Cooperation 2023-04-29

The Republic of Korea (ROK) Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Chang-Yang and the United States (U.S.) Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm met for the ROK-U.S. Ministerial Energy Policy Dialogue (EPD) to strengthen bilateral cooperation on clean energy, climate, and energy security.

The meeting promoted bilateral collaboration across the three pillars of EPD–policies and planning; technologies and research; and commercialization and deployment– in support of the two countries’ economy-wide decarbonization efforts.

Minister Lee and Secretary Granholm discussed strengthening clean energy technology supply chains as well as collaboration on clean energy technology demonstrations and deployment.  The two affirmed the need to promote clean energy partnerships through people-to-people exchanges, investments, and R&D cooperation between experts. The Minister and the Secretary acknowledged that bilateral cooperation can also be expanded to coordination in multilateral forums in which the U.S. and ROK are active, such as the G20, APEC and the Clean Energy Ministerial/Mission Innovation. Additionally, Minister Lee and Secretary Granholm reaffirmed that both countries are committed to engaging in global civil nuclear cooperation consistent with the statement by President Biden and President Yoon.

The U.S. Department of Energy and the ROK Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy recognize the critically important role of private industry to foster innovation and technology deployment, promote joint demonstration projects, and expand clean energy jobs and looks forward to engaging with a range of private and public stakeholders to advance clean energy and decarbonization efforts.
