MOTIE and KCCI launch Carbon-Free Energy Forum 2023-05-18

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) held a ceremony on May 17 at the Korea Press Center for launching the “CFE Forum” with aim to internationally expand the use of carbon-free energy.

CFE stands for “Carbon-Free Energy” and refers to any energy source that does not emit greenhouse gases. The CFE Forum is composed of various private sector energy firms and experts to draw a wide range of opinions and facilitate practical discussions, including representatives from Samsung Electronics, LG Energy Solution, SK Hynix, POSCO, Doosan Enerbility and various relevant associations.

The Forum will be actively partaking in reviewing realistic carbon-free energy certification systems and future processes for forming international standards. The goal is to develop measures by the end of this year for introducing a carbon-free energy certification system, and a pilot project is slated for next year. Meanwhile, the entire Government and business network will be harnessed to raise awareness of carbon-free energy expansion across the international community.

In his opening message, MOTIE Minister Lee Chang-yang stated that “the “RE100” campaign is indeed significant, but it can be burdensome for companies,” and emphasized that “realistic policies and systems should be considered as well through an inclusive approach incorporating the concept of carbon-free energy.”

Mentioning that the CFE Forum will go through an internal reorganization centered around KCCI and officially kick off in July, MOTIE added that “while harmoniously pursuing both values, namely climate change response and stable energy supply, the discussion table will be approached open to all possibilities with aim to establish policy directions that are in our interest.”
