1st Vice Minister visits BIE for talks on World EXPO 2030 Busan 2022-09-08

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) announced on September 7 that 1st Vice Minister Jang Young-jin will be visiting Paris through September 6-8 in order to submit the candidature dossier for World EXPO 2030 Busan to the Bureau International des Expositions (hereinafter “BIE”).

The 1st Vice Minister is heading the Government delegation team, which also consists of Kim Yoon-il, President's Future Strategy Secretary, as well as Shin Chae-hyun, Ambassador for International Relations of Busan.

The team arrived at the BIE in the morning of September 7 and submitted the dossier, then met with BIE Secretary General Dimitri S. Kerkentzes for talks regarding the upcoming EXPO.

Vice Minister Jang illustrated Korea’s plans for Busan hosting the World EXPO based on differentiated strategies and hosting capacities unique to Korea, and relayed Korea’s strong aspirations for hosting the global event on behalf of “Korea One Team” (Korean government, Busan, and civil organizations).

The delegation team held luncheon conferences for BIE member states’ personnel in Paris on September 6-7 and called for support for Busan as host of World EXPO 2030. On the 7th, they also met with the ambassadors from Mongolia and Rwanda and emphasized Korea's vision of turning the event into an opportunity for all global citizens to seek better solutions for climate change and other challenges.

The submitted dossier contains the World EXPO outline, major theme and subthemes, estimated number of visitors, venue, transportation, lodging, financing and differentiation strategies. The BIE member states (170 in total) will review the documents as a point of reference in not only assessing the candidate’s host capacity but also the candidate city’s local inspection slated for the first half of 2023.

The winner will be determined by a vote of the BIE member states around November 2023.

MOTIE intends to make utmost efforts in meeting with 170 BIE member states and carrying out promotion activities with the World EXPO 2030 Busan Advisory Committee at the helm, and in tandem with the civil support committee and the National Assembly’s special committee.
